Even before the global financial crisis turned into a global economic collapse and before the onset of the Second Great Depression, the Big 3 of the US auto industry were already heading for trouble. The damage was mostly self-inflicted as they insisted on churning out big trucks and SUV's in the face of rising crude oil prices, and now it has been compounded by a devastating economic slowdown which has seen sales plunge by unprecedented levels.
